Green-collar worker

Ok, you got me, there’s no such thing as a green-collar worker: I was just trying to find some kind of link for the new collar I made at a workshop for Forest Hill Fashion Week. Interestingly enough, there is something called pink-collar workers, which means doing stereotypical women’s work. Who knew?

I attended the free workshop at Stag & Bow and they provided the materials and a template for you to cut out the shape of the collar. They had a choice of different styles of collars but I liked the strong look of this one. The gems are acrylic ones from Paperchase sale a few years ago – I saw them and thought they might come in use sometime.

Getting round the corners neatly was the hardest part. Folding the binding inwards, a bit like when wrapping a present was marginally more successful than cutting the binding at each edge and sewing each corner. I used the binding to make the ties too.

The most fun bit was deciding on the patterns for the gems and sticking them on – I wanted a slightly asymmetrical, haphazard design. I think the beads actually make it. And the quirky lime and brown colour combination of course!

Oh and sewing geek alert: you can buy a cool tool to easily make binding. There are different sizes for different widths of binding. That’s my Friday night sorted…
